The Virginia Creeper Trail - Damascus, VA
“How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?” – Satchel Paige
“Get at least eight hours of beauty sleep, nine if you’re ugly.” - Betty White
The Story -
To close out an inspiring church youth group retreat, ten teenagers and I braved the icicles, wind, and cold temperatures to bike the seventeen-mile upper section of the Virginia Creeper Trail. After taking a thirty-minute shuttle ride from Damascus up to a refurbished Whitetop Station, we cruised leisurely down a dirt and gravel trail traversing what some consider the most rugged and picturesque scenery in the Eastern United States.
Do The Loco-Motion - Little Eva
The Virginia Creeper Trail is best known as a former railroad track converted into a very popular biking trail, yet in reality, the VCT is a multi-purpose trail with opportunities to bike, hike, run, fish, horseback ride, people watch, and even cross country ski. Located in southwestern Virginia, the thirty-four-mile trail runs from Abingdon to Whitetop, Virginia, near the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and the North Carolina state line.
Tell Me More, Tell Me More - Summer Nights Grease
Steeped in history and items of special interest, the VCT drifts mostly downhill through and over some of the most spectacular scenery imaginable – open farmlands and fields, dense forests, large boulders, Christmas tree farms, streams, creeks, and rapids. Along the way, you will cross nearly fifty wooden trestles as you glide by stunning scenery and travel through small, charming towns and past restored railroad depots. The VCT intersects with the Appalachian Trail a few times, and between Damascus and Whitetop, you’ll find Whitetop Laurel Creek, one of Virginia’s largest and most beautiful wild trout streams, just feet from the trail. More information on the VCT including its history, maps, and trip-planning information can be found here.
Spill The Tea -
The Virginia Creeper Trail has been on my to-do list for some time and I was very excited about the opportunity to finally experience it. And boy and girls, let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint!
The trail was a little muddy in spots and it took some time to get comfortable on the mountain bike, yet the ride was fabulous and truly a unique adventure. Riding mostly next to the fast-flowing water, we crossed over numerous wooden trestles and bridges, stopping occasionally to admire the rapids, waterfalls, and take in the views. It was truly magical.
Wrap It Up -
Looking for a fun family outing or something different to try with a friend, The Virginia Creeper Trail is an excellent option. The summer and fall are obviously the most popular times to visit yet don’t discount going in the winter when there are far fewer people. Let me know if you go, I’d love to join you.
