Soco Falls, The Boogerman and Caldwell Fork Trails in the Cataloochee Valley - Great Smoky Mountains
“Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.” - Oscar Wilde
“The secret is not to chase butterflies…. It’s to tend the garden so that they come to you and if they don’t come, at least you have a garden.” - Mario Quintana
The Story -
On a gorgeous spring day two weeks ago, my sister Stacy and I hiked eight miles on the Boogerman and Caldwell Fork trails in the exquisite Cataloochee Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains. We first stopped at Soco Falls, a beautiful, double waterfall on the edge of the Cherokee Indian Reservation located between the towns of Maggie Valley and Cherokee and only twenty minutes from our intended hiking destination. The combination of Soco Falls and our hike on the Boogerman and Caldwell Fork Trails made for a full day of exploration, fun, and adventure.
Soco Falls -
Soco Falls is truly a hidden gem that most people drive right by and do not realize that such a stunning double waterfall is nearby. The twin waterfalls are gorgeous, and offer a number of smaller waterfalls both above and below the main falls to view and enjoy. The main falls can be easily seen from a recently built observation tower just below the parking area, yet is best observed from it’s base which requires a strenuous descent with significant rock scrambling and the use of multiple ropes. If the idea of a steep and technical downhill climb coupled with an equally difficult return up the hill intimidates you, stick with the viewing platform which still offers exceptional views of the main falls without much effort.
Cataloochee Valley -
Leaving Soco Falls, we traveled about twenty minutes northwest on US-19 and US-276, with the last three miles on Cove Creek Road, a well-maintained curvaceous gravel road which led to the Boogerman / Caldwell Fork Trailhead parking area located deep within the Cataloochee Valley. Nestled within the stunning Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Cataloochee Valley is a natural wonderland filled with a rich history, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes. Among its many attractions, the Boogerman Trail and Caldwell Fork Trail stand out as two incredible hiking routes that immerse adventurers in the park's beauty.
Spill The Tea -
The Boogerman Trail is named after the late Robert "Booger" Palmer, an eccentric local resident and landowner. It is an almost 8-mile loop trail that weaves through ancient forests and scenic valleys. This trail offers an opportunity to step back in time, providing glimpses into the area's logging history while showcasing nature's resilience.
