Wells Knob Trail - Elkin, NC

The Story -

On Saturday morning, Ginger, Sophie, and I hiked three miles on the serene Wells Knob Trail in Elkin, North Carolina. At 1,865 feet above sea level, Wells Knob is one of the highest topographic features in all of Wilkes County.

Piedmont Land Conservancy / Mountain-To-Sea Trail -

Already a part of the NC Mountains-To-Sea Trail, the Wells Knob Trail is a relatively new addition to the Piedmont Land Conservancy's (PLC) trail system. The PLC, an amazing organization that works to protect the natural resources of the Piedmont region of North Carolina, recently acquired Wells Knob and the land adjacent to it, therefore preserving the Knob and a wider corridor of the trails for future generations.

Next to Elkin Creek.

The Wells Knob Trail -

The Wells Knob Trail is one part of the 69-mile Elkin Valley Section of the Mountain-to-Sea Trail (Segment 6) which runs from the Devil’s Garden Overlook in Stone Mountain State Park over Wells Knob, to the Hauser Road Trailhead in Pilot Mountain State Park.

Hundreds of tall and thin hemlock trees seem to touch the sky.

Spill The Tea -

The northeast trailhead of the Wells Knob Trail begins at Elkin Creek before starting its ascent up the knob through a series of modest switchbacks. And though not considered a strenuous hike, the steep elevation climb over a short distance does provide an excellent workout. We are in relatively good shape and found ourselves taking several breaks to rest and catch our breath.

Along the leaf-covered trail, we passed multiple abandoned structures and crossed several wooden footbridges all the while walking through the quiet forest filled with tall hemlocks, full rhododendrons, and large pines. The views at the summit are nothing extraordinary, with the 360° views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains and Elkin Valley encumbered by numerous trees. What limited views we did have however were still spectacular!

One way to cross the creek, though not recommended.

Additional Wells Knob Trail Photos -

The parking area is not hard to find but is in an unexpected and odd place down a gravel road at Wits End Eventing, LLC.

Recently abandoned shack located just off trail.

Which way Ginger?
